Abortion in the United States
Most of the statistics below are taken from one of two sources, the United States government’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI), which is Planned Parenthood’s research affiliate that monitors trends in the abortion industry.
 

• There have been approximately 50 million abortions since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973. (CDC)

• Approximately 1.2 million abortions occur annually in the United States, which amounts to approximately 3,300 abortions every day. (CDC)

• Approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies end in abortion. (CDC)

Why Women Have Abortions

Abortion Statistics by Age/Race - The Targeting of Minorities/Low Income Individuals
 

• More than half (56%) of women having an abortion are in their 20’s or younger (AGI)

• 53% of women having abortions are white, 36% are black, 11% are Hispanic or other, although a disproportionate percentage of black and hispanic women have abortions (CDC)

• Black women have abortions at a rate of 470 per 1,000 live births, Hispanic/other women have abortions at rate of 319 per 1,000 live births, while white women at a rate of 158 per 1,000 live births. (CDC)

• The most recurrent characteristics of women having abortions are non-white, poor, unmarried. (AGI)

• Since 1973 (Roe v. Wade) almost 30% of the black population (between 12-13 million) was erased through abortion.
